Observing reversing currents

/

Water tank
Almost same as in Plumb and McEwan's experiment.3)
Walls: Acrylic pipes
Height: 60cm
Internal diameter: 40cm
External diameter: 60cm

A donut-shaped air chamber divided into 16 parts and covered with a rubber membrane was floated on the surface of the water.

Working fluid
Salt water used to form stratified layers.

Visualization
Neutrally floating plastic beads were used.

Experimental process
Air pistons were used to force air in and out of the air chambers to create an internal gravity wave and create a mean current.
